According to the 2011 census, the CSR in India was 919, a decline from 927 in 2001 to 945 in 1991. It indicates a widespread practice of sex-selective abortion or female foeticide in India, which is illegal and unethical.

A preference for sons, the dowry system, social norms, and a lack of awareness influence sex-selective abortion.

The second objective of BBBP is to ensure the girl child’s survival, protection, and education. The campaign also involves engaging with various stakeholders, such as community leaders, religious leaders, medical professionals, and frontline workers.to sensitize them about the issue of gender discrimination and mobilize them for action.

The incentive component involves financial support to families with daughters through schemes like Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY). 

SSY is a savings scheme that allows parents or guardians to open a bank account for their girl child before she turns ten years old. 

This account has a good interest rate and tax advantages. It matures when the girl turns 21 years old or gets married after 18 years old.

The scheme also involved mass media campaigns, community mobilization, training and capacity building, enforcement of laws, and monitoring and evaluation. In 2018, the project will cover all 640 districts in the country.
